If you wake with a sore shoulder, a dipped middle or the feeling that you have been sleeping on a board, firmness is worth reconsidering—but the number on the label is only a clue. One brand's “6” can feel like another brand's “8,” and body weight changes the experience again. This mattress firmness guide helps you choose a sensible starting point by position and build. Side sleepers can also compare our best mattresses for side sleeping.
01
Firmness and support are not the same
Firmness is how hard or soft the mattress feels. Support is whether it keeps your body in a stable position. They overlap, but they are not the same: a hard mattress can support badly, while a softer comfort layer can sit on top of a strong support core.
Foams, coils, covers, room temperature and body weight all influence the feel. Use a brand's scale to compare models within its own range, not as a scientific measurement that travels from one shop to another.
02
Start with sleep position
Side sleepers put more pressure through shoulders and hips, so they often need enough contouring to let those areas settle. Too firm can create pressure; too soft can let the waist and hips sink unevenly. Our additional side-sleeper mattress shortlist covers that balance.
Stomach sleepers generally need more resistance through the middle. Back sleepers often land somewhere between contour and firmness, while combination sleepers need to turn without feeling stuck. Couples may disagree completely about the same mattress, making split firmness, zoning or a broadly medium feel worth considering.
03
Account for body weight and materials
A heavier body compresses the layers more deeply and usually experiences the mattress as softer. A lighter sleeper may barely engage the deeper support and find the same model firmer. Total depth, edge support and durability therefore matter alongside the advertised feel; see our guide to mattresses for heavier people.
Memory foam tends to hug and can soften with warmth. Latex feels more buoyant. “Hybrid” only tells you that coils and comfort layers are combined; it does not guarantee a particular firmness or quality. Hot sleepers should consider the whole setup, including bedding and room temperature, rather than trusting one cooling label.
04
Use the home trial deliberately
Read the home-trial terms before ordering: delivery, return fees, collection, minimum use and the required bed base. A 365-night headline is less generous when returning the mattress is expensive or the wrong foundation voids the warranty.
Give yourself time to adapt, but keep notes on pressure, support, heat and ease of movement. Do not wait until the final week to discover the return process. Our Sleep category and How We Choose page explain the wider research approach.
In a shop, lie in your normal position for more than a polite minute. Online, use position and body weight to form a hypothesis, then let the trial test it. Persistent pain or disrupted sleep deserves qualified medical advice; a firmness scale cannot diagnose the cause.
