# 29. Wireless Earbuds for Working Out: What Features Matter?
Wireless earbuds can be ideal for exercise because there is no headphone cable to catch on clothing or gym equipment.
However, earbuds that feel comfortable at a desk may not stay securely in place during running, lifting or high-intensity workouts.
Fit, water resistance and controls become particularly important.
01
Secure fit comes first
The best workout earbuds should stay in place when your head and body move.
Standard silicone tips may be enough for some users.
Others benefit from stabilizing wings, fins or ear hooks.
Fit is highly personal because ear shape varies significantly.
If possible, choose earbuds that include several ear-tip sizes.
02
Check the water-resistance rating
Sweat resistance matters.
Earbuds are commonly rated using the IP system.
A higher appropriate rating can provide better protection from sweat and splashes.
However, water resistance does not automatically mean the earbuds are suitable for swimming.
Always follow the manufacturer's limits.
03
Battery life
A typical gym session does not require enormous battery life.
However, longer battery life means less frequent charging.
The charging case also matters because it can recharge the earbuds several times between wall charges.
If you use active noise cancellation during workouts, remember that ANC generally reduces battery life.
04
Are noise-cancelling earbuds good for the gym?
They can be.
ANC helps reduce repetitive gym noise and background music.
However, blocking your surroundings completely may not be appropriate in every environment.
For outdoor running or cycling, awareness of traffic and other people is important.
Transparency mode can be useful because it allows more outside sound through.
Our guide to active noise cancellation in wireless earbuds explains how it works.
05
Physical vs touch controls
Touch controls look clean but can sometimes be awkward during workouts.
Sweat or accidental touches may trigger commands.
Physical buttons can provide clearer feedback, although they may require pressing the earbud into your ear.
The better option is mostly personal preference.
06
Sound quality during exercise
Heavy bass can be enjoyable during workouts, but the earbud's fit has a huge effect on sound.
A poor seal reduces bass and makes outside noise more noticeable.
Before deciding that an earbud sounds bad, try another tip size.
07
Microphones and phone calls
If you take calls while walking or exercising outdoors, microphone quality matters.
Wind can be particularly challenging for true wireless earbuds because their microphones are small and exposed.
Models with good wind-noise reduction are preferable for outdoor use.
08
Should you use cheap earbuds for workouts?
That depends on your priorities.
Budget earbuds may be perfectly adequate if you mainly need music during gym sessions.
More expensive models often provide better ANC, transparency modes, microphones and connectivity.
If you are choosing a pair, see our wireless earbud recommendations.
09
Practical checks before you continue
Secure fit is personal. Try alternate tip sizes and, where supplied, wings or hooks before assuming the earbud shape is wrong. The left and right ears may need different sizes. Shake your head and reproduce the movement of your workout at home while you can still return the product.
An IP rating describes tested resistance under defined conditions, not permanent waterproofing. Sweat, salt and cleaning products can still affect contacts and seals over time. Wipe the earbuds after exercise, let them dry and only then put them in the charging case. Our workout earbud guide lists current options.
Physical buttons can be easier with gloves or wet fingers, while touch controls avoid pressing the earbud deeper. Decide whether you need volume, track and awareness controls without reaching for a phone. For running, compare earbuds designed for running and keep enough outside awareness for the route.
ANC can make indoor cardio quieter, but outdoors it may hide important cues. Use transparency cautiously and remove an earbud wherever traffic or instructions demand full attention. Check single-charge runtime rather than the case total, and consider water-resistant earbuds if heavy sweating is the main concern.
