The 5 Best Backpacks
The word backpack covers a laptop commute and a week on a trail, but those bags solve different problems. A 55-liter hiking pack needs a fitted harness and room for gear. A 40-liter travel bag needs to pass your airline's size rules when full. A 20-liter packable bag is useful only if you accept thin straps and a smaller load. I would choose the trip before choosing the bag.
Teton Scout is my pick for an overnight hike, while Maelstrom's 40-liter pack suits a shorter outdoor trip with a rain cover. G4Free folds down for a day out. MATEIN is for a laptop commute, and tomtoc is the more structured travel carry-on option. I have kept those five purposes visible because calling one of them 'best overall' would hide the most useful difference between them.

01 — TETON Sports
Best overnight hiking loadTeton Scout 55L
Scout is the one I would start with for a multi-day hike that actually needs 55 liters. Its internal-frame format belongs on a trail with layers and camping gear, not under an airline seat.
It leads for carrying a substantial outdoor load, but fit matters more than liters. Measure torso length and try the loaded hip belt before trusting the bag for a long walk.

You need an airline personal item.
What I like
+Large internal-frame carrying format.
What to weigh
−Too bulky for light daily travel.
02 — Maelstrom
Best shorter hiking tripMaelstrom 40L Hiking Backpack
Maelstrom gives a day hike or lighter overnight 40 liters without jumping to the Scout's volume. Its included rain cover is useful when the weather changes on a trail.
It is second because the middle size can be just right, but the cover is not a guarantee of dry electronics or a perfect fit. Check the harness and pack weight against your own load.

You need a very small city daypack.
What I like
+40-liter space and rain cover.
What to weigh
−Fit and weather protection need checking.
03 — tomtoc
Best travel carry-on layoutTomtoc 40L Travel Backpack
Tomtoc is the 40-liter choice I would inspect for airports rather than campsites. A more structured travel layout keeps clothing and electronics easier to reach during security and transfers.
It ranks third because carry-on usefulness depends on external dimensions when packed. It also lacks the trail-oriented harness purpose of the Teton.

You need an overnight hiking frame.
What I like
+Travel-focused packing access.
What to weigh
−Airline fit varies with packing.
04 — MATEIN
Best laptop commuteMATEIN 17-inch Laptop Backpack
MATEIN is for someone whose day starts with a laptop and ends at an office, not a trailhead. The stated 17-inch laptop accommodation gives a starting point for a larger work device.
It is fourth because a diagonal screen label does not prove the sleeve fits your laptop's body. Measure the device and avoid carrying heavy hiking gear in a commute bag.

You need a framed hiking pack.
What I like
+Laptop-oriented compartments.
What to weigh
−Sleeve fit must be measured.
05 — G4Free
Best packable day bagG4Free 20L Lightweight Backpack
G4Free is the bag I would tuck into luggage for errands or a short outing after arrival. Its 20-liter capacity is enough for a layer and water without carrying an empty full-size pack.
It finishes fifth because packability usually trades away harness support and structure. Keep the load modest and do not mistake it for a protected laptop bag.

You need suspension for heavy gear.
What I like
+Small foldable travel format.
What to weigh
−Limited support and structure.

Good questions
FAQ — Backpacks
01Is a 40-liter backpack always airline carry-on size?+
No. Airlines set external size limits, and a packed bag can bulge beyond its listed dimensions. Check the exact fare and packed measurements.
02Does an included rain cover make a bag waterproof?+
No. Covers can help in rain, but seams, exposed straps and the opening still need consideration; protect sensitive gear separately.
The short answer
Start with the Teton Scout 55L.
I recommend it for overnight hiking gear and a fitted harness. Choose something else if you need an airline personal item.
