The 5 Best Espresso Machines

An espresso machine is a poor surprise if you thought it would also grind beans, froth milk automatically and make a drink in one touch. A portafilter means dosing, tamping and cleaning a puck; a built-in grinder saves counter space but adds another part to maintain. I would decide how much of that routine sounds enjoyable before deciding what the pressure number on a box means.

The Barista Express is my starting point for learning espresso with a grinder in the same machine. CASABREWS lowers the entry price but needs a separate grinding plan; Ninja suits a household that wants several coffee styles, while the two other Brevilles mainly change the controls. A pump-pressure badge cannot tell you how a shot tastes; grinder adjustment and the routine you enjoy matter more.

01 — Breville

Best all-in-one learning setup

Breville Barista Express BES870XL

4.4/5Amazon
$699.95In Stock

I would start with the Barista Express if you want to learn espresso but dislike the idea of buying a separate grinder immediately. The integrated grinder and manual steam wand keep the core workflow in one machine.

It leads for a buyer willing to dose, tamp and adjust. You give up the speed of automated milk and must clean both the brew path and grinder; it is not a one-button latte.

02 — CASABREWS

Best compact lower-cost manual

CASABREWS CM5418

4.3/5Amazon
$118.99In Stock

The CM5418 makes sense on a smaller counter and a tighter budget, especially if you already own a suitable grinder. It gives you a portafilter and steam wand without paying for an integrated grinding system.

It ranks second because compactness and price are real advantages, but the true setup cost includes a grinder if you want fresh dialed-in beans. Check clearance around its water tank and wand.

03 — Ninja

Best guided multi-drink machine

Ninja Luxe Café Premier

4.2/5Amazon
$599.00In Stock

Luxe Café is for someone who wants espresso alongside other coffee styles and some guidance from the machine. A built-in grinder and broader drink program can simplify a mixed household’s menu.

It is third because versatility adds controls and maintenance, and an all-in-one machine is larger than a simple compact portafilter. Check the exact drink modes and counter dimensions before paying for them.

04 — Breville

Best touchscreen milk-drink workflow

Breville Barista Touch BES880

4.2/5Amazon
$980.00Only 4 left in stock - order soon.

Barista Touch is worth considering if you make repeated milk drinks and prefer a touch interface with saved settings over remembering each step. It still asks you to care for the grinder and brew group.

It ranks fourth because the interface costs more than a basic machine and does not remove hands-on preparation. Compare the exact milk-texturing process with how much work you actually want to do.

05 — Breville

Best display-led Breville alternative

Breville Barista Pro BES878

4.4/5Amazon
$824.78Only 3 left in stock - order soon.

Barista Pro is the alternative for someone who wants an integrated grinder and a clear display but prefers physical control to the Touch workflow. I would compare the exact grinder adjustments and heating routine with Barista Express.

It finishes fifth because these Brevilles overlap heavily for many buyers. Choose the Pro only when its controls and current price solve a specific frustration; the name alone is not an upgrade.

Good questions

FAQ — Espresso Machines

01Do I need a separate grinder for espresso?+

A machine without a built-in grinder needs suitably ground coffee. A capable adjustable grinder is useful if you plan to dial in fresh beans; confirm the exact machine bundle.

02Does a 20-bar pump make better espresso than 15 bar?+

A pump’s advertised maximum is not a taste score. Grind, dose, extraction and machine control matter more to the cup.

The short answer

Start with the Breville Barista Express BES870XL.

I recommend it for learning espresso with one main appliance. Choose something else if you want a drink without handling a portafilter.
