Do You Need a Modem for Fiber Internet?
For a fiber-to-the-home connection, the first question is not which cable modem to buy. It is which ONT or fiber gateway your provider installs and what router you can connect to it. Confirm the equipment for your address and plan before ordering anything.

ONT, router and cable modem: different jobs
An optical network terminal (ONT) terminates the fiber service. A router shares the connection with your wired and Wi-Fi devices. Some provider equipment combines functions, so the ONT may not be a separate box.
DOCSIS cable modems connect to cable internet over coax. They do not replace the ONT on a fiber-to-the-home service. A MoCA adapter also is not a modem: it can carry a local network over suitable existing coax, but cannot provision your fiber connection.
Start with the connection at your address
Ask your provider whether the final connection into your home is fiber, coax or another technology. A network described as fiber-powered does not necessarily mean fiber enters your home. The connection type, installed equipment and service tier determine compatibility.
Cox distinguishes homes reached by coax from its fiber-to-the-home installations. Its fiber guidance describes an ONT and a router connection; its approved cable-modem list is not a list of ONT replacements.
Can you use your own router?
Often the useful purchase is a router behind the provider equipment, not a modem. Do not assume every provider allows the same setup. Confirm whether your service needs its gateway, how your own router connects, and which configuration the provider supports.
Before choosing a model, check the WAN connection, supported port speeds and any authentication or configuration requirements with your provider. Also ask whether a third-party router affects telephone, television or technical support included with your plan.
What to ask before buying
Which ONT or gateway will be installed at my address, and is it supplied as part of the service?
Can my own router connect directly to that equipment? Which Ethernet port, configuration and plan speeds are supported?
Must I retain the provider gateway for internet, phone or television? Who supports faults when I use my own router?
Only compare routers after those answers are clear. A fast Wi-Fi label alone does not establish compatibility with the access connection.
Why this page no longer lists five “fiber modems”
The previous shortlist included cable modems and a MoCA adapter. Those were not suitable substitutes for a fiber ONT. We removed that shortlist and replaced it with this explanation, retaining the page address so existing links remain useful.
