The 5 Best Portable USB Audio Interfaces

A USB interface is portable only if it handles the session you are taking with you. A solo voiceover needs an XLR input and headphones; two people recording together need two microphone inputs. A mobile video setup may need a separate phone or camera connection. I would count the real sockets and the power source before trusting a small box in a product photo.

The Scarlett Solo is my clean starting point for one mic plus an instrument. M-Audio's Duo is the better value for two microphones, while MOTU's M4 adds line inputs and more routing for a larger session. MAONO P1 serves the creator who also connects a phone or camera; PS22 Lite is the low-cost computer setup. USB-C shape alone does not guarantee that every interface will run from every tablet or phone.

01 — Focusrite

Best solo recording kit

Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen

4.6/5Amazon
$159.99In Stock

For a laptop bag carrying one XLR mic and a guitar, I would start with the Scarlett Solo. Focusrite documents one XLR mic input, a separate front instrument/line jack, two balanced monitor outputs and USB bus power. The controls are straightforward enough to set up a voiceover or songwriter session away from a fixed desk.

Solo is literal here: it is not the right pick for two independent XLR microphones. I rank it first for the most common single-person recording setup, but I would choose M-Audio's Duo for an interview and MAONO P1 if an OTG phone or camera connection is the core requirement. Check the supplied cable against your laptop ports.

02 — M-AUDIO

Best affordable two-mic interface

M-Audio M-Track Duo

4.4/5Amazon
$69.00In Stock

Two guests cannot share the Scarlett's single XLR socket. The M-Track Duo has two combo mic/line inputs, 48V phantom power and direct monitoring, giving a small podcast or acoustic duo a sensible computer-based recording kit without paying M4 money.

I put it second because its two-mic capability is genuinely useful, though M-Audio specifies 48 kHz operation and its basic controls offer less routing than the MOTU. Confirm the exact USB cable and iOS power needs if the host is a tablet; the desktop setup is simpler. For a single voice, the Scarlett has the clearer solo workflow.

03 — MOTU

Best for more sources and meters

MOTU M4

4.6/5Amazon
$279.95In Stock

The M4 earns its larger footprint when you travel with more than a mic and guitar. MOTU documents two front mic/line/instrument inputs, two additional rear line inputs, four outputs and full-color level meters. That gives a keyboard or stereo source somewhere to go without unplugging the microphones.

It is expensive and physically less minimal than the Solo or Duo. I would not pay for the extra I/O if every session is one spoken voice, and I would check laptop or mobile power and cable requirements before a field recording. It ranks third because the added sockets are excellent for the right session but wasted weight for the typical solo traveler.

04 — MAONO

Best phone-and-camera workflow

MAONO P1 Hybrid Interface

4.4/5Amazon
$129.99In Stock

I would compare the P1 if the recording chain includes a smartphone or camera, not just a laptop. MAONO lists an OTG connection, camera output, one mic preamp and auto-gain controls on this model. Those connections can avoid a second adapter box for a creator moving between a desk and video shoots.

One mic preamp still means one XLR voice at a time, and the camera/phone path needs the correct cables and host support. I rank it after the simpler computer interfaces because its advantage is specific to a hybrid workflow. If you only record into a laptop, the Scarlett or M-Audio is an easier purchase to explain.

05 — MAONO

Best low-cost computer interface

MAONO PS22 Lite

4.2/5Amazon
$49.99In Stock

The PS22 Lite is the budget pick for a creator who needs a basic mic and instrument path at a laptop without paying for MAONO's P1 extras. MAONO's comparison lists one mic preamp and one instrument/line input, a useful fit for a first voice-and-guitar setup.

The Lite omits the P1's OTG phone port, camera output and auto-gain. I rank it fifth because the M-Audio Duo buys two microphone inputs for a modest step up, while the Scarlett gives a more clearly documented solo hardware layout. Choose the Lite if the actual constraint is purchase price and computer use is enough.

Good questions

FAQ — Portable USB Audio Interfaces

01How many XLR inputs do I need for a two-person interview?+

Two simultaneous microphone inputs. A device advertised as 2-in/2-out may count an instrument jack as the second input, so inspect the physical connectors.

02Does USB-C guarantee iPad or phone compatibility?+

No. Check the maker’s supported devices, cable type and power requirements for the exact interface and phone or tablet. A matching connector is only the first step.

03Will a portable interface work without wall power?+

Many use USB bus power, but the host still must supply enough power, especially with 48V phantom power. Confirm the maker’s requirements for the actual mobile setup.

The short answer

Start with the Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen.

I recommend it for one microphone plus an instrument on a laptop. Choose something else if you record two xlr microphones at once.
