How to Choose a Lightweight Double Travel Stroller
A double stroller needs to carry two children safely and still fit the route you travel. Check each seat and the folded frame separately; a low frame weight alone does not make a stroller easy to travel with.

Start with the children and each seat
Record each child’s age, weight and height, then check the manufacturer limits for the specific left and right seats. Some double designs give the seats different capacities or recline options. Do not assume a seat that reclines is approved for a newborn; confirm the manufacturer’s minimum age and any bassinet or car-seat requirements.
Measure both open and folded dimensions
A side-by-side frame may be easier to access but too wide for a familiar doorway. Tandem designs have a narrower footprint but can be longer and may have uneven legroom. Measure the narrowest door, lift space and vehicle boot that matter to you. Compare those measurements with the exact model’s open and folded specifications.
Try the travel routine, not just the weight figure
Check whether one adult can fold, lift and carry the stroller with both seats installed. Wheel removal, self-standing folds and accessible carry handles change the practical effort. For flying, check your airline’s current stroller rules and do not assume that a double stroller qualifies for cabin storage.
Frequently asked questions
Is a side-by-side double stroller always wider than a tandem? Generally the seat layout makes side-by-side models wider, but the exact dimensions determine whether either design fits your doorways.
Can a newborn use either seat? Only if the manufacturer approves that exact seat and configuration for the child’s age and size. A bassinet or compatible infant car seat may be required.
What counts as lightweight for a double stroller? Compare the weight of the usable two-seat configuration, including removable seats or adapters that you must carry. A bare-frame figure is not the total travel load.
Will a double stroller fit in an overhead bin? Do not assume so. Check the folded dimensions and the airline’s current rules; gate checking may be the practical option.
Which safety features should I check? Verify each harness, brake, seat and weight limit in the manufacturer instructions. The American Academy of Pediatrics also advises using the harness and parking brake correctly.
