Image quality is more than 4K

Resolution is only the pixel count. Sensor quality, lens, bitrate, exposure and windscreen reflections decide whether those pixels contain useful detail. Look for representative moving footage in bright sun, darkness and mixed street lighting, not a perfect still frame from the product page.

A very wide lens sees more of the road but spreads detail over a larger scene and bends the edges. Front-and-rear cameras add context behind the vehicle; cabin cameras can make sense for rideshare work where local rules allow them. More channels also consume storage faster.

Understand parking mode before buying

Parking mode is not one feature. Some cameras record slowly, some preserve the moments before an impact and others wake after motion or a shock. All useful versions need power after the ignition goes off, and many car sockets stop supplying it.

A hardwire kit can provide constant and switched power with low-voltage protection, but installation interacts with trim, airbags and the vehicle's electrical system. Follow both manuals or use a qualified installer. Dedicated battery packs avoid some wiring concerns but add cost and another battery to manage.

Choose storage for continuous writing

Dash cams write and overwrite video constantly, which is hard on a memory card. Use a high-endurance microSD card in a capacity and speed class the camera maker supports. A cheap general-purpose card is a poor place to save the one clip you actually need.

Work out how many hours remain before old footage is overwritten, especially with two or three cameras. Impact locking helps, but copy important files promptly. Format the card using the maker's schedule and method, and keep a compatible spare for troubleshooting.

Check installation and ownership details

Mount the camera inside the wiper-cleared area without blocking the driver's view, and route every cable away from airbags and controls. Heat resistance, a stable mount and a supercapacitor are valuable for a device that lives behind glass. Laws on placement, audio and privacy vary, so check where you drive.
