If you are packing for Europe and wondering whether your phone charger needs a voltage converter, check the tiny print on the charger first. A travel adapter only changes the shape of the plug. When the label says “100–240V, 50/60Hz,” you normally need the right adapter and nothing more. A single-voltage appliance is a different story. What a travel adapter does
Think of an adapter as a physical translator: it lets one set of pins fit another socket, but the electricity passing through stays local. Calling it a converter is more than a wording mistake because it can encourage someone to plug a 120V appliance straight into 230V.
Choose for every country on the itinerary, not just the first hotel. Check plug type, grounding and maximum load. “Universal” adapters cover many common sockets, but some are awkward in recessed outlets, omit less common countries or do not preserve an earth connection.

Read the device input label
Find the line marked Input on each charger or appliance. A range such as 100–240V, 50/60Hz means the power supply is designed for the usual systems around the world. Phones, laptops and cameras often qualify, but checking takes seconds and is safer than assuming.
A device marked only around 120V should not go directly into a 230V wall socket, and the reverse may not work properly either. Motors and clocks can also care about frequency. If the label is worn away or unclear, use the manufacturer's documentation rather than experimenting in the hotel room.

Why hair tools are difficult
Hair dryers and straighteners are where travel kits get complicated. They draw far more power than a phone charger, and small converters may not tolerate the load. Electronic temperature controls, motors and grounding can add further incompatibilities.
A genuinely dual-voltage travel appliance—or the dryer supplied by the accommodation—is usually the simpler answer. If a converter is unavoidable, it must match the voltage, wattage, appliance type and duration. A plug that fits proves only that the metal pins line up.

Build a compact, safer charging kit
Make a short list of countries, plug types and device labels before buying. Pick reputable equipment with a secure fit and enough USB output, then inspect it for loose pins, cracks or heat damage before each trip.
