What a travel adapter does

Think of an adapter as a physical translator: it lets one set of pins fit another socket, but the electricity passing through stays local. Calling it a converter is more than a wording mistake because it can encourage someone to plug a 120V appliance straight into 230V.

Choose for every country on the itinerary, not just the first hotel. Check plug type, grounding and maximum load. “Universal” adapters cover many common sockets, but some are awkward in recessed outlets, omit less common countries or do not preserve an earth connection.

Read the device input label

Find the line marked Input on each charger or appliance. A range such as 100–240V, 50/60Hz means the power supply is designed for the usual systems around the world. Phones, laptops and cameras often qualify, but checking takes seconds and is safer than assuming.
