If you are trying to keep a fridge running during an outage or power a campsite without guessing, start with two numbers: how many watts the equipment needs right now, and how many watt-hours it uses over time. A portable power station can have a big battery and still fail to start a motor. List the loads first, then size the inverter and battery separately. Separate watts from watt-hours

Watts describe the load at a moment in time; watt-hours describe stored energy. A station rated for 1,000W with a 1,000Wh battery will not run flat out for a perfect hour because the inverter and electronics consume some of that energy.

Write down everything that may run together. Refrigerators, pumps and other motors can briefly draw much more when starting than they use once running. That surge is easy to miss and is a common reason a seemingly large station shuts down. Where reliability matters, use manufacturer figures or measure the appliance rather than guessing.

Calculate daily energy

Runtime starts with a simple calculation: watts multiplied by hours. A 60W device used for five hours needs 300Wh in an ideal world. Add the loads, then add breathing room for conversion losses, cold weather, heat and standby consumption. Direct USB or DC can be more efficient than turning battery power into AC and back again.

Not every appliance runs continuously. A fridge cycles; a router does not. Measuring a representative day is far more useful than multiplying every maximum label by 24 hours. It also shows where small changes—such as switching off an optional load—buy meaningful runtime.

Match outlets and recharging

Check that the outlets actually fit the plan: enough AC sockets, useful USB-C power and regulated DC where needed. Devices that only need USB may be better served by our smaller power bank capacity guide, avoiding the inverter altogether.

Then decide how you will put the energy back. Fast mains charging is excellent between short outages. Solar is less predictable, so compare the station's allowed voltage and current with the panels and expect weather, shade and season to cut the headline wattage.

Use extra care for backup power

Never backfeed a wall outlet or improvise a connection to home wiring. A portable station is not a substitute for an approved transfer system. Critical medical equipment also deserves a tested backup plan confirmed with the equipment manufacturer, not an optimistic calculator result.

Test the full setup before the outage or trip. Run the intended cables and loads for the required time, listen for fan noise and watch idle drain. A rehearsed system is much more reassuring than a runtime that exists only in a spreadsheet.
