Trying to steam milk and ending up with hot liquid under a cap of dry bubbles? The wand needs to do two jobs at once: add a little air and keep the milk moving. Start with cold milk in a cool pitcher, clear the water from the wand and place the tip just under the surface. Let in a small amount of air, then lower the tip enough to create a steady whirlpool. Stop before the milk becomes too hot to handle, wipe the wand straight away and clear it again. The goal is glossy milk that pours as one smooth texture. A smaller pitcher with the same fill level each time makes the sound and movement much easier to learn.

The wand needs air and movement
At the surface, the steam tip draws small amounts of air into the milk. Baristas call this stretching. Slightly deeper, the jet spins the milk and breaks larger bubbles into a finer texture. Heating changes how milk proteins support that foam. Too much air makes stiff froth; too little movement leaves hot milk with a cap of bubbles.

Listen for a soft tearing sound
Fill a suitable pitcher to around the start of its spout, leaving space for expansion. Activate steam briefly into the drip tray to clear water. Put the tip near the surface, open steam fully if the manual instructs it and listen for a quiet paper-tearing sound. Add air early, then raise the pitcher slightly so the tip stays under the surface.
Angle the pitcher until the whole volume rolls in a vortex. Stop aerating once you have enough volume and focus on heating and polishing the texture. Turn steam off before removing the tip to avoid spraying. Swirl and tap the pitcher gently, then pour promptly. A home espresso machine with steady steam makes the learning process easier.

Stop before the milk gets too hot
A clip thermometer is useful while learning because touch is imprecise. The best stopping point depends on milk and preference, but do not keep heating after the pitcher becomes too hot to control or the milk starts to smell cooked. Steam continues heating it briefly after the valve closes, so stop before the final target.
Plant drinks behave differently because their protein, fat and stabilisers vary. Barista versions are designed to foam more consistently, yet each brand needs a slightly different amount of air. Begin cooler, add less air than you think and watch texture rather than copying an exact dairy timing.

Clean the wand straight away
Wipe the outside immediately with a dedicated damp cloth, then purge the wand into the drip tray as the manual directs. Dried milk can block tip holes and is much harder to remove later. Never handle the hot metal with bare fingers. Remove and soak a tip only when the maker provides that cleaning method.
Weak steam may come from a blocked tip, incomplete warm-up, scale or a boiler that needs time after brewing. Check holes only with the approved tool, descale on the maker’s schedule and avoid poking with anything that enlarges them. A very large pitcher makes a single drink hard to spin, while an overfilled small pitcher leaves no room for expansion.
Use one that gives the steam tip enough depth and your hand enough control. Practise with a consistent milk quantity and note where the tip sits relative to the spout. Once the rolling motion becomes repeatable, change only the amount of air for a flatter latte or foamier cappuccino. Pouring skill cannot rescue separated foam, so concentrate on glossy texture before attempting patterns.
